This is an excellent way of enjoying Tortuguero’s natural wonders, quietly navigating throughout the network of rivers, lagoons and canals. We offer 3 different tour options: from 2 days & 1 night to 4 days & 3 nights.

On day one, after an early morning departure from San José, we will travel east, riding thru Braulio Carrillo National Park. We’ll breakfast at Río Danta. Now in the Atlantic lowlands, we travel thru banana plantations until we reach our starting point in Suerte River. Guides will begin the briefing to become familiarized with your boats, gear and safety issues. Lunch will be along the way after an hour paddle down the river, in the middle of the tropical forest. After lunch, you will continue to meander in this lush forest with amazing flora and fauna. Late afternoon arrival at Mawamba Lodge, welcome cocktail and dinner here tonight. We will overnight at Mawamba Lodge every night.

If staying longer than 1 night, next day paddle will take you to an exploration of a lifetime in Samay Laguna. Here you will board the kayaks for a 3 to 4 hours exploration of the area. The magical entrance to Laguna Nueve and a brief visit to the beach will be some of the day’s highlights. Wonderful clean waters and total solitude will be part of the experience. Lunch is served on site and return to Mawamba Lodge for overnight. On day of departure, after breakfast you will board the boat for the return trip back to the tortuguero dock, where the bus will be waiting for the return to San José, stopping en route for lunch at the private Rio Danta Restaurant.

Trip is suited for anyone with high spirit of adventure, wanting to discover these enchanting canals. Trip is not recommend for children under 12.

The Land of Turtles

Every year, from July to September, Tortuguero National Park welcomes the arrival of the GREEN SEA TURTLES that come to lay their eggs at the beach of this National Park. Tortuguero, translated as “land of turtles” is the most important site in the Occidental half of the Caribbean for the nesting of the Green Sea Turtles. Having the opportunity to admire, on a tropical night sky, one of these impressive animals drag herself to the beach, dig a nest and lay the eggs, is definitely a unique experience that will be hardly forgotten.

Still, the turtles are endangered animals, both by natural and human predators. That’s why in 1959 Mr. Archie Carr, one of the leading authorities on sea turtles became the founding scientific director of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) created to study and protect these millenary animals. Visitors at Mawamba Lodge during the Turtle nesting period will receive our pamphlet “GREEN TURTLES ARE ARRIVING Enjoy them…responsibly” that relays important information on how to enjoy this amazing opportunity and still help protect the turtles.

To obtain this goal, Mawamba Lodge is observant of the conservation rules established by the National Parks authorities. To promote amongst the local population to stop capturing the turtles for meat and eggs, several projects involving the local community have been created. One is the education of the locals in order to become tour guides for the Green Turtle Night Tour, so they can obtain profit WITH the turtles and not FROM the turtles. Thus, we appreciate it very much when visitors comprehend that most of the turtle guides have limitations with foreign languages, such as English.

During the two hour tour, groups are limited to a maximum of 10 people per guide and a maximum of 10 groups are allowed at the beach at the same time, for a total of 100 people. Hence, when one confirms the participation on the tour, it is understood that no refunds are available. There are two tour schedules and the National Park determines who goes on which schedule; one is from 8 to 10:00 pm and another from 10:00 to 12:00 midnight.
